35 weeks. Baby Grayson is just ready!!!!

August 18th, 2009

So, some of you may have heard about our fun weekend. For the rest who did not here is the whole story. We got our first test run for the hospital and a taste of labor!

When we went to the doctor Wednesday he told us the baby had dropped early and labor could be days or weeks away. So we started to finish up all the little things we felt we needed to do. I didn’t feel good Saturday and slept most of the day. Sunday I woke up rested but still had a funny feeling. We went to church and I was very uncomfortable moving and shifting the whole time. We decided to walk around Wal-Mart and pick up some groceries to see if the change in activity would stop the tightening. It didn’t. We grabbed some lunch came home and started paying attention to the pain now. We decided if it was labor contractions we shouldn’t wait for the 5 min rule if they wanted to stop them so we called Dr. Ross and he said come on to the hospital. The contractions were only 10 mins apart but my back was really hurting and such. Everyone has told me “oh you will know when you are having contractions”- I guess I didn’t! Even though I kept telling everyone last week, he’s coming early, I just having a feeling. I guess I was just in denial Sunday.

Poor Scott was thinking along with me that I had read so many books that maybe I was just thinking I was in labor and wasn’t. I didn’t want to go to the hospital! We took our time packing the rest of our hospital bags and folding laundry, Scott was even stopping at yellow lights. When we got there, they hooked me up and sure enough they were contractions coming every 3 mins. Also I had started to dilate. So they started the meds to stop them. Dr. Ross said 36 weeks was ok to deliver but anything before that he would stop labor. We were a few days shy of 35 weeks. Only one week and 2 days!

I must have asked the poor nurses 10 times “are you sure these are contractions?” and they kept saying “yes”. The medicine stopped the contractions for about 20 mins and then started again fairly quickly. This time every 2 mins but with some different pain this time. But trying to be strong (or stubborn), I caught myself holding onto the side of the bed a couple of times, asking what’s going on. Scott was following the contractions on the screen and I’m looking at him in wonder –why is this is hurting so bad now! You know the nurses were laughing at me. It’s labor silly, there’s pain. I was still in denial, I thought they were stopping this, why the pain. This was even after the Demerol shot they had given me earlier. Ok no need to ask anymore -I now knew this was a contraction! Take my breath away. And it was just the beginning of the whole process! Help us all when we really get there!!!!

They gave me more pain meds through the IV which seemed to just make me sleepy. But with more meds throughout the night- they slowed the contractions down somewhere around 2-3 am. Dr. Ross came by that morning and said we could go home. They were slowed to 2-3 contractions an hour (with no pain) and now we wait again. They sent us home with some more medicine to help keep them stopped. Also with instructions to rest and see him in a few days. (That is the hardest part for me) Contractions are still coming but nothing like before. Baby Grayson is just ready!

I didn’t want Grayson coming early but at the same time I was thinking “a week” we are doing all this just to wait a week, lets go ahead and let him come. But I know from all the books that one week is so important in little boys and the development of their lungs. So we will wait and do it again. At least I now know what a true contraction feels like and the beginning pain. For a first time mom this is the part I think I was most anxious about. Not knowing. So Baby Grayson may be here next week when we are 36 weeks or he may wait another month and go full term. We will see what the doctor says Friday….
